Manchester United are afraid of a ten Hag 2 if Amorim chooses to repeat Eric ten Hag’s transfer window strategy.

Keith Wyness thinks Manchester United may already be feeling a bit worried about Ruben Amorim’s desire to bring in some of his favorite players from Sporting CP.

With Erik ten Hag’s tenure ending in disappointment, United is likely cautious about repeating similar mistakes.

After parting ways with Ten Hag in his third season, United moved quickly to secure Amorim as his replacement. The new manager will officially start on November 11, but he’s already laying out plans, reportedly keen to bring players like Goncalo Inacio, Marcus Edwards, and Pedro Goncalves to bolster his squad.

Wyness, however, has warned United to be cautious. He believes it’s crucial not to let Amorim’s personal preferences drive signings that might not align with the club’s needs or long-term vision, as happened under Ten Hag.

“There’s definitely some concern around Amorim bringing his favorites in,” Keith Wyness told Football Insider. He suggests it’s up to figures like Ashworth and Jason Wilcox to ensure United’s strategy isn’t overly influenced by any one manager. They need to ensure the club’s style remains cohesive and isn’t just based on the manager’s opinions.

While Wyness acknowledges Amorim’s talent, he emphasizes that Amorim is only one piece of United’s overall puzzle. The club needs to prevent a scenario where they’re stuck with a roster of players brought in by Amorim if things don’t work out with him as they hoped.

Under Ten Hag, United saw several familiar faces join from his previous clubs, including Antony, Lisandro Martinez, Andre Onana, Noussair Mazraoui, and Matthijs de Ligt. Not all of these signings were successful, with Antony, in particular, being criticized as a “huge mistake.”

In hindsight, Wyness suggests the board might have been wiser to exercise more restraint in Ten Hag’s signings, especially given Antony’s hefty £86 million price tag. To avoid a similar situation, United may opt to keep Amorim’s transfer influence in check.

This doesn’t mean Amorim won’t pitch ideas for bringing in players he trusts, though. Besides Inacio, Edwards, and Goncalves, there’s also speculation about center-back Ousmane Diomande, who could be available if a strong offer, around £70 million, comes in.

Interestingly, Amorim has mentioned he won’t target Sporting players in January, which could signal a more measured approach to squad changes, at least in the short term.

Meanwhile, United is still considering some players who were on their radar during Ten Hag’s tenure. For instance, they’re reportedly keeping an eye on left-back Alvaro Fernandez Carreras, a former United player who was recently sold but comes with a buy-back clause.

Amorim might be open to Fernandez’s return, especially since his style could fit well with a 3-4-3 formation, offering flexibility that Amorim may value as he works to build a cohesive squad at Old Trafford.
