The match between Egnatia and Partizani in the Albanian Superliga was the latest for the 28-year-old Raphael Dwanena, who passed away today reports the local media.
He was playing at the highest level of Albanian football in the last year and was a regular starter for the leaders of Egnatia. The Ghanaian international also played for the national team.
They expressed their condolences in an official statement.
“The Ghana Football Association is sad to hear of the death of our former player Raphael Dwamena and wishes to express our deepest condolences to his family at this difficult moment. The former Ghana striker was pronounced dead on Saturday after collapsing on a football pitch during a League match in Albania.
“The Egnatia player suffered a heart attack during a League match between Egnatia and Partizani.
“According to reports from Albania, the 28-year-old collapsed on the field in the 24th minute of the game and passed minutes later at the Kavaja hospital.” The former Ghana international represented Ghana nine times and scored two goals.
Official Reaction
The president of Ghana also expressed his condolences in an official statement.
‘He served his country well and showed class anytime he represented Ghana,” President Simeon-Okraku said in the statement.
“This news is hard to take. Our best wishes go to the family at this moment”
“May the Almighty God find him a peaceful rest.”
The president of the Republic of Albania also expressed their condolences and the deepest thoughts for the player and his relatives.
“I learned the terrible news of the tragic loss of the Egnatia captain, Raphael Dwamena.
“I express my deepest condolences to the family of the player, the Egnatia club, and the Rrogozhina fans.”
The Albanian local press and the Ghanaian press have written about the reasons and also analyzed the causes of his death. According to A1 Report a media in Albania, the death came because of the previous problems that the footballer had with his health.
The news about his passing was published by his former clubs which have paid tribute to Dwamena’s contribution to this sport.
