Celtic FC Women sealed their place in the semi-finals of the Sky Sports Cup after putting in an impressive performance to defeat Glasgow City 3-0 tonight (Friday).
The Ghirls made the ideal start to proceedings as Natalie Ross opened the scoring early in the game, before second-half goals from Amy Gallacher and Kit Loferski secured victory.
Last time the two sides met, it was late heroics from Colette Cavanagh which proved crucial for Celtic. However, on this occasion, it was an early goal which set the tone for Fran Alonso’s side.
A perfect delivery into the box from Shen Menglu on the left saw Natalie Ross brilliantly head the ball into the back of the net beyond City keeper, Lee Gibson.
The Celts then created a number of opportunities to double their lead as Murphy Agnew came close with an effort on goal which was well-saved.
The Hoops thought they had an all-important second goal just moments later as a corner into the box was spilled into her own net by Gibson. However, the referee harshly judged Paula Partido to have fouled the Glasgow City shot-stopper and awarded the visitors a free-kick.
Although the Celts put in a strong second half display, the away side did have some chances of their own as the Celtic defence remained strong, with Kelsey Daugherty getting down well to stop any danger on goal.
After making the perfect start to the first-half, the Ghirls followed that up by making another brilliant start to proceedings in the second.
Shen Mengyu’s corner into the box caused all sorts of havoc for the City defence once more as she looked to find the head of Caitlin Hayes.
As the visitors looked to clear the ball to safety, it landed as far as Amy Gallacher, who was on hand to tap the ball home with a smart finish underneath the goalkeeper.
Following her introduction at the break, substitute Kit Loferski proved to be a thorn in Glasgow City’s side once again, and she got in on the goalscoring act with a tremendous finish on the 71 minutes.
Racing through on goal, the forward remained composed before firing the ball beyond the keeper with the outside of her right foot.
It proved to be another successful night for the Hoops at the Excelsior Stadium as they sealed their place in the last four of the Sky Sports Cup.
