Since the 2014-15 season 18 teams have competed for the throne of champion each year. Two teams are relegated to the Segunda division with the best two teams that are promoted to the first division. 

This League has been the home of world-class players and legends of this sport. Eusebio and Cristiano Ronaldo are the biggest names that played respectively with Benfica and Sporting Lisbon. Figo, Nani, and Deco have been talented Portuguese players who started in this league also. Today Liga Portugal represents a big home of talents with some of the best young players playing for the big three in Portugal.

Two best-ranked teams go to the Champions League, with the third place that goes to the Europa League. Taça de Portugal winner goes to the Europa League and the fourth place secures a ticket that allows them to play in the Uefa Conference League.

The League is dominated by the so-called Big Three. The Big Three is a nickname for the three most powerful clubs in Portugal. The teams are Benfica, Porto, and Sporting CP. These teams missed only two championships in the season 1945-46 when Belenenses won the title.

In the season 2000-2001, it was Boavista that broke the winning triangle. Benfica, Porto, and Sporting play regularly in Europe and in most cases share the first three places in the classification in Primeira Liga. Benfica is the most titled squad, Porto is the nearest competitor and Sporting is the third team in this special group of teams.

The big trio grabbed the biggest attendance also. They have more fans on their home grounds and share the best profits. These teams are also the record holders for their success in Portugal and Europe
