Falcons lose starting RT Kaleb McGary for season, impacting QB Penix Jr.
The Atlanta Falcons are facing a major setback as they will be without starting right tackle Kaleb McGary for the rest of the season, dealing a blow to second-year quarterback Michael Penix Jr.
McGary, a crucial piece on the offensive line, was placed on the injured reserve list due to a knee injury suffered during practice, leaving a void in protecting Penix’s blindside.
Since being drafted in 2019, McGary has been a key player for the Falcons, appearing in 93 games and starting 92, showcasing his importance in the team’s lineup.
The absence of McGary’s backup, Sam Norton, further complicates the situation, with Norton expected to be out for six to eight weeks following ankle surgery. In his place, Elijah Wilkinson will step in at right tackle until Norton’s return, bringing his experience from the Denver Broncos.
To bolster their offensive line depth, the Falcons acquired Michael Jarrell from the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for a conditional seventh-round pick, providing some relief amid the injury setbacks.
However, Penix will need to be extra vigilant in the pocket without the protection of McGary and Norton early in the season, highlighting the challenges ahead for the young quarterback.
With McGary’s absence posing a significant challenge for Atlanta, the team will have to rely on their remaining linemen to step up and fill the void to support Penix effectively.
