Houston Texans Safety Jimmie Ward Placed on Commissioner Exempt List After Arrests

The NFL has taken action against Houston Texans safety Jimmie Ward by placing him on the Reserve/Commissioner Exempt List following recent arrests, impacting his participation in team activities.

Ward, aged 34, found himself in hot water after being arrested in August on a felony warrant in Texas, which came on the heels of a June arrest in the same state for allegedly assaulting and threatening a woman. As a result, he is now barred from attending Texans practices and games while on this special player status list, which is only utilized by clubs under extraordinary circumstances, as defined by the league.

Commissioner Roger Goodell will determine the duration of Ward’s time on the list, leaving it open-ended. The safety, who has been dealing with a foot injury, has been absent from team practices during training camp as he was placed on the physically unable to perform list. A first-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers, Ward spent nine seasons with them before joining the Texans for the last two years.

Last season, Ward started all 10 games he played with Houston, contributing 48 tackles and two interceptions to the team’s defense. His absence from the field now raises questions about the Texans’ defensive lineup and the impact this disciplinary action will have on the team’s performance going forward.

As the situation develops, the Texans will need to adjust their strategies and roster to fill the gap left by Ward’s absence. The Commissioner Exempt List serves as a stark reminder to players about the consequences of off-field behavior and the importance of upholding the league’s standards both on and off the field.
